They sold our heritage on a lie and have got away with it, they keep espousing we're a "Big Club" but we're not, we're small time, always have been & probably always will be

If they are serious about the "NEXT LEVEL" then they need to spend at least the same again this summer.
We have the 2nd biggest stadium in Britain and one of the biggest anywhere and we sell it out. 2nd highest amount of ST holders too so there really are no more excuses left!

Good to see that Gold has ordered his legal defence team of the old soak Hugh and his puppet Whetstone to justify the pathetic way this Club is run, our commercial arm is 3rd rate, if a club of our size can only pull in £44 million through ticket sales and commercial activity

We’ve got to stop pissing silly money on the likes of Perez, wilshere and Hugill who come here and barely set foot on pitch. We need to be scouting for more players like Diop and while we’re at it give Silva a go up front.

Yes, Husillos is in that role but I think we all know that some of the signings made last summer were still punts that had already been lined up before he arrived into the post.

Nasri, Perez, Sanchez,Wilshere didn't need to be lined up by a director of football...Anderson Fabianski and Yarmolenko too.

Balbuena, Diop - probably did

We're mug punters in the market.

It's been that way for years.

Who else in their right mind would have given Willshere a fucking Three year contract.

I see Alex has been playing FM2019 all weekend btw Mario Husillos is our DoF so why some of you insist we need one is a mystery

Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
If it's more convenient I could cite Niakhate, another French u21 picked ahead of Diop at that level, who moved to Mainz last Summer and hasn't afaik had much of a great time there. His cost: ~£5m again. It doesn't have to be a successful player, it's just about looking at the fees being paid. I think, taking all bias out of it, our fee for Diop was outlandish.

Now we could say he justified being double/triple/quadruple his peers because his talent is so amazing in comparison. That's a valid argument at least imo. I think it would be a silly claim personally in respect to players at the top of the Bundesliga, but it would at least explain the fee.

Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
Alex, there are lots of players that, like Diallos, get sold for 4.5m and aren't a success.

You cherrypick Diallo because he's been enough of a success that he was sold again for 20m.

But unless you know who the future Diallos are, then complaining about not discovering a undiscovered gem like Diallo is pointless.

Spot on. We need a proper recruitment department, and a proper and logical decision making process on transfers. It's pathetic that we don't. We're mug punters in the market.

The General absence has been significant in our poor away form he is the backbone of our defence

Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
Comparing fees requires no hindsight whatsoever, as they were paid without full knowledge of the success or failure of the player. Had Diop been a disaster for us it wouldn't change my argument in the slightest, just as it doesn't after his relative success.

I think my argument that we overpaid for Diop has nothing to do with the success or failure of any player - it's simply a dry examination of fees paid for similar prospects around Europe.

"Diop is exactly the sort of young and hungry player I want to see come to the club, but I think we could get that profile a whole lot cheaper"

Correct - but to achieve that you need a director of football who has the contacts or an assistant which has had a long standing database with scouting reports over a long period of time

Our owners don't do this - they still trust third-rate parties to do the work for them. Which is why we end up with a fair few players on agents books who they find more of a challenge to offload

Hence the chairman always taking a punt on questionable players and putting a positive spin on their potential success

Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
We can’t compete with the top 6 for players
We are looking at a slightly lower level but have the advantage of being Premier league and London based for foreign players
We are competing with the group behind the top 6 ... Everton, Leicester etc and if we pay more to move quickly and get it done then so be it.
But as said it’s all about profile. We should be buying 21-25yo’s who have the pace, energy and physicality to play in this league.
Especially true of replacing Carroll, Arnie & Pea this summer. No Italians with sculpted sideburns or immobile midgets

Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
Alex, looking at players who look cheap is hindsight is pointless. Unless you can tell us who the current undiscovered diamonds we should be looking at are, it's moot.

Although if you did know who they were you'd be earning a killing as a scout for a top club instead of talking shit on a messageboard.

Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
Diallo has been the captain of the u21s. Effectively they're the players who got Diop dropped from that team - that's the reason I bring them up. Both have played in the champions league, which Diop incidentally mentioned as his ultimate aim when he joined us.

You could probably do the same comparison with other nations. But I think you get pretty much the same answer each time. Diop is exactly the sort of young and hungry player I want to see come to the club, but I think we could get that profile a whole lot cheaper.

setofmecano only cost that little because he transferred between two red bull clubs, he's also played about half the games diop has and a lot shorter

diallo signed for dortmund for 28m, and again isn't as good as diop

diop's understudy has played 11 (ELEVEN) career senior appearances

I don’t know those players
Any of them captain of a French club at 21, u21 internationals and ready to play at Premier league level from day 1?

Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
I actually think our form has dipped since the Arnie issues. We've stopped playing football and there is too much hoofing it away and not controlling what we do with it. Confidence and spirit has been eroded. That said the balance of the side isn't right either. Too many players who don't want to track back, get a foot in or use their brain to make a sensible decision.

Alex V 1:39 Sun Mar 10
Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
You can get the right profile at almost any price if the circumstances are right.

The obsession with Diop continues, but the fact is that players of his profile tend to go for a lot less than he cost us (eg Upamecano for £9m, Diallo £4.5m to Mainz). Diop's young replacement at Toulouse went to Barcelona (!) for £900k in January!!!

If we spent even vaguely sensibly we'd have potentially a lot more Diops at the club, and a lot less Hernandez/Carrolls.

Sven Roeder 1:32 Sun Mar 10
Re: Appearantly the transfer budget in the summer will be 25 million plus whatever we can get from sales
It’s not about the amount it’s about the profile
Young hungry and suited to the Premier league.
Like Diop eh Alex?
Though you thought he was overpriced and we should pass. Right?
There are players about who are affordable and suitable
